Unicorn tail hair is an ingredient in Potions. Its exact uses and properties are unknown, but it is presumably rather potent, as is anything that originates from a unicorn.
In 1992, the centaur Firenze rescued Harry Potter, who was serving a detention in the Forbidden Forest. Harry had just observed the drinking of unicorn blood and Firenze asked if Harry knew what unicorn blood was used for. Harry replied that he didn't, as they had only used the horn and tail hair in Potions.[1]
